What are Smile Lines?
Smile! Or don’t if you are self-conscious about having smile lines. What are smile lines you may ask? Well, smile lines are the creases in your skin that extend from both sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth. While the name of this crease is officially nasolabial folds, it is commonly referred to as smile lines due to the increased visibility of the lines while smiling. While obviously smile lines aren’t harmful to your health, the lines make the face appear older.
Common Causes of Smile Lines
Smile lines develop mainly due to aging. This is because, over time, lines tend to naturally develop in the skin due to the repetitive movements in the face and the loss of elasticity in the skin throughout life. Another big reason for the creation of smile lines is from going through weight loss or weight gain. This is because weight loss can leave extra loose skin on the face, while weight gain can accentuate the current smile lines by pushing fat to the creases. Smile lines can also develop through sun damage and smoking, which generally are bad for the skin.
